DIY Yoga Mat Storage

Mindfulness, yoga, and meditation go hand-in-hand. In order to practice yoga, one should have a peaceful and clean environment. But, when you have yoga props and mats lying around, things get tricky.

Thankfully, managing all these props and mats is not so difficult. Even if you don’t have a dedicated container, you may be able to store them hassle-free using these DIY methods.

DIY Jute and Cardboard Wicker Basket

For this, you’ll need the following:

  1. Cardboard pieces
  2. Scissors
  3. Jute ropes
  4. Hot glue gun
  5. Transparent tape

Steps for Jute and Cardboard Wicker Basket

  1. Take four pieces of cardboard, preferably 3 feet in width and 2 feet in length.
  2. Altering the size can be done according to your needs.
  3. Using a hot glue gun, glue the four sides together in such a way that they form the walls of the rectangle.
  4. Now, close one of the openings using another cardboard of the appropriate size.
  5. After this, you’ll have a box-shaped structure.
  6. Next, take transparent tape and jute ropes.
  7. Lay a long strip of tape over a table, so the adhesive side faces upward.
  8. On this sticky side, you will start placing your jute ropes. Repeat this with several other pieces of tape until you have enough strips to cover the sides of the box.
  9. Now, take the tape’s one end and secure it to the box’s interior side with hot glue. Make sure the jute strips are facing outward.
  10. Follow this to all four sides. Once done, glue another piece of the strip from the top corner of the box in a horizontal position.
  11. Ensure that the start of the horizontal strip remains inward and is covered by vertical strips.
  12. Now, pass the horizontal strip through the vertical strips in such a manner that these lay on top alternatively.
  13. Glue the ends and middle to ensure that no strip stays loose.
  14. Repeat until the box is fully covered.
  15. Secure the endings. You may also add a piece of fabric or decorative paper to the inside of the holder to add a softer touch.
  16. Once the finishing is done, you’ll be ready to store your yoga mats in these stylish boxes.

DIY Yoga Mat Storage Box Using Ropes

If you find jute weaving a little too complex, you can try this method. Gather these supplies for this DIY technique:

  1. Hot glue gun
  2. Scissors or utility knife
  3. Cardboard pieces
  4. Clips

Steps for storage with ropes

  1. Take a piece of cardboard (preferably rectangular). Ensure the cardboard is wide enough to hold at least one of your yoga mats (rolled).
  2. Glue a piece of fabric or decorative paper to one side of the cardboard. This will be your inner side.
  3. Take a long rope and, using hot glue, attach it to the cardboard. Move around the cardboard and after each round, start a new circle. This will allow the ropes to form a box-like shape.
  4. Once you have obtained the desired height, secure the ends, and your box will be ready.

Storage Box Out of Newspapers

For this, you’ll need the following:

  1. Newspapers
  2. Paper cutter
  3. Wooden stick
  4. Adhesive paper glue
  5. Clips
  6. Cardboard pieces

Steps for storage with box out of newspapers

  1. Take some old newspapers and use a cutter to separate the pages.
  2. Now, fold the paper thrice and cut it again.
  3. You may use scissors to cut the paper instead of a paper cutter.
  4. Wrap the newspaper in circular motions using a wooden stick or any thin cylindrical object.
  5. Make sure that you do this so that the resultant paper strip is as long as the original paper strip or only a few inches shorter than that.
  6. Using paper glue, secure the ends of the newspaper.
  7. Let it dry, and remove the paper roll from the wooden stick.
  8. In order to create a paper stick/strip that is longer, you can attach two strips to one another.
  9. If you want a cleaner look, insert one end of the rolled paper strip into another and secure the joints with glue.
  10. Now, take a rectangular-shaped cardboard of the desired length and width. This will be your base of the holder.
  11. Using glue, attach the ends of the newspaper rolls to the cardboard.
  12. Make sure you leave little space or gaps between the newspaper strips (2–3 cm) and let it dry.
  13. Glue another piece of cardboard of the same size on these strips.
  14. Once the glue has dried completely, you may start weaving.
  15. For this, you’ll need rolled newspaper strips.
  16. Fold your strip in half, and from one corner of the glued newspaper strips, start weaving.
  17. Pass the two strips alternatively so that the glued stripes stand upright.
  18. Repeat to all sides until you have obtained the desired length.
  19. Secure the ending with glue.
  20. You may use clips to hold the newspaper till the glue dries.

Old Cardboard Box Yoga Mat Storage Box

Things you’ll need the following:

  1. Cardboard box
  2. Decorative paper
  3. Tape
  4. Glue
  5. Paper cutter or utility knife

Steps for cardboard box

  1. Take an old cardboard box. If you are someone who shops through the web regularly, finding these boxes won’t be much trouble.
  2. Carefully cut the top of the box using a paper cutter.
  3. Take a transparent tape strip and cut it as per the length and width of the cardboard box.
  4. Secure the corners of the box using tape.
  5. Now, take your decorative paper. If you like recycling, old newspapers would work best.
  6. With the help of glue, stick your paper to the outer faces of the cardboard box.
  7. You may use clips to hold the paper and stick it.
  8. Once the glue has dried, you’ll be ready to use your DIY yoga mat storage box will be prepared.
