Does the ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears ever drive you crazy? If you’re looking for a way to ease the ringing and improve your overall quality of life, yoga could be the answer.

Yoga is known to cure or reduce symptoms of many diseases through its guided exercises and meditation, which provides both physical and mental peace.

Tinnitus is the situation in which a person hears a sound without the presence of an external source. It might be surprising, but millions of people worldwide are affected by this potentially debilitating condition. The sound may be constant or intermittent and the pitch can vary from a low roar to a high squeal. Read this article to find out the best poses of yoga that can help.

Yoga to help cure tinnitus

There is no determined cure for tinnitus, but several things can help alleviate the symptoms. Yoga is one technique that can help ease the symptoms of tinnitus.

Certain yoga poses can help improve blood circulation and relieve pressure on the inner ear, which can help reduce Tinnitus symptoms. Other benefits of yoga include reducing stress and anxiety levels, which can trigger or worsen tinnitus.

The following are some recommended yoga poses that may help in alleviating the symptoms of tinnitus:

Halasana (Plow Pose):

Firstly, lie flat on your back and place your hands beside you, which is parallel to the body. Now, lift your legs 90 degrees such that your waist should come off the ground. Then, slowly lower your legs behind your head and hold for 30 s to 1 min.

This pose is beneficial in improving blood circulation to the head and neck region. It also helps stretch and strengthen the muscles in this area, reducing the chances of muscle spasms. The lower cases of muscle spasms minimize the occurrence of tinnitus as the muscle doesn’t go under fatigue. Also, increased circulation helps in better oxygenation of the area.

Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward-facing dog):

You need to stand up straight with your feet shoulder-length apart for this asana. Next, slowly bend down and crawl with your hands forward as far as possible. Be mindful not to bend your knees. Push your hips upward, exhale and maintain this posture for a few minutes.

An imbalance of ear fluid can cause fullness of the ear resulting in tinnitus. This asana helps relieve that pressure on the ears by elongating the muscles in the neck. Also, the deep stretch redistributes the fluid and decreases the sound.

Ustrasana (Camel Pose):

Stand on your knees, forming an L between your upper body and legs. Slowly bring your right hand back, grab your heel, and repeat the process with your left hand. Finally, push your hips and chest outwards while bending your head backwards.

This pose helps to improve blood circulation to the head and neck region and helps stretch the muscles in this area. Stronger muscles imply more resistance to changes in liquid pressure. Also, an increase in the blood flow towards the ear can accelerate your healing process in case of any infection.

Setubandhasana (Bridge Pose):

You need to lie on your back and bend your knees upwards while keeping your feet on the ground. Now, place your hand with your palm facing down above your shoulder. Slowly lift yourself off the ground forming a bridge. Hold, come back and repeat.

This pose helps to stretch the chest, shoulders, and neck. This extended stretch helps relieve muscle tension and strengthen the ear region. Also, it increases blood flow to the head, which helps balance the fluid pressure around the ear and gives you a sense of relaxation.

Viparita Karani (Legs Up The Wall Pose):

Lie down and stretch your hands towards the side. Now, place your tailbone at the base of a wall and start walking up the wall to form an L shape. If you want to increase the difficulty, lose the wall support, and lift your leg in the air while boosting your bottom with your hands.

This is a very relaxing pose that helps pump more blood towards the head and neck region and increase the oxygen flow. It also aids in lowering anxiety and stress levels which are one of the main reasons for tinnitus.

Matsyasana (Fish Pose):

Fold your elbows while lying flat on your back with your palm facing the ground. Now, slowly lift your upper body and tip your head backwards. However, avoid doing this pose if you suffer from cervical pain.

This posture assists in opening the chest and lungs, allowing for more deep breathing. An increase in breathing capacity helps decrease stress levels and fastens the process of recovery. So, if you can do the fish pose, it can help reduce your anxiety levels and increase your quality of sleep, which all contribute to resolving tinnitus.

Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend Pose):

First, sit upright, stretching your legs outwards. Take a deep breath and stretch your hands upwards. Now, slowly bend forwards, trying to touch your toes while exhaling. Don’t force yourself to reach the toes; hold the position where it just starts to get uncomfortable.  If you have a tight back and side of the body, bend your knees to do this pose.

This pose helps stretch the back and shoulder muscles, which can help relieve tension in these areas. In addition, it helps to calm the mind and reduce stress levels, increasing the quality of your sleep. A well-rested body can thus heal faster from tinnitus.

Yoga Nidra (Yoga Sleep):

This guided relaxation technique can help reduce stress and promote deep relaxation. You need to lie down on the floor on your back. Keep your breathing regular and focus on your spot of illness. Feel the body curing your tinnitus.

This entire exercise helps to calm the mind. A relaxed mind concentrates on healing and reduces the symptoms of tinnitus. This is just a form of meditation that works on your entire well-being.

Pranayama (Breathwork):

Pranayama is a yogic breathing technique that can help to calm the mind and body by focusing on inner silence. It is often used in conjunction with other yoga poses or meditation practices.

Coordinated breathwork helps open the veins and arteries of the body, providing it with more oxygen and detoxifying the entire body. This, in return, decreases chronic illnesses like high BP or atherosclerosis, which are a few causes of tinnitus.

In the end

Tinnitus is a condition that can be effectively managed with the help of yoga. Practicing yoga for 30 mins a day has proven to be very helpful. This will help reduce your ear ailment and increase your overall wellness. However, don’t proceed to practice any challenging poses without consulting a qualified yoga teacher.
